Professor of Jurisprudence, who for many years was a scholarships holder and a lecturer at German, British, American and Australian universities. The author of the following books: The Re-emergence of Civil Society in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union (1991), Contractarianism versus Holism: Reinterpreting Locke’s Two Treatises of Government (1995), From Communism to Liberalism: Essays on the Individual and Civil Society (1998), “Liberalism. Zarys myśli politycznej XIX i XX wieku” (2000) (Liberalism. The Outline of Political Thought in the 19th and 20th Centuries), Forgotten Freedom: In Search of the Historical Foundation of Liberalism (2004). The first Polish edition of John Locke’s Two Treaties on Government (1992) was translated and furnished with an introduction and a comment by Professor Rau. He also prepared the anthology of classical texts on moral education entitled “Księga Cnót” (2006) (The Book of Virtues). Member of the Sixth Term Senate and Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).



Lawyer and researcher in political and legal thought. Since 2001 he has been working in the Department of Legal and Political Doctrines in the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Łódź. Professor Chmieliński is also the co-founder of The Alexis de Tocqueville Center for Political and Legal Thought, the co-founder and Management Board member of the Polish Society of Political Thought, and a Subject Editor of Folia Iuriscia magazine. As a researcher he is interested in the subject matter of legitimacy of public institutions (state, law and authority), questions of freedom, ownership, social justice, self-organization of the collectivity and public choice theories, as well as the issues of cosmopolitanism and cosmopolitan law. He specializes in contemporary German thought and political and legal doctrines of classical liberalism, libertinism and individualist anarchism. The author of numerous articles, two monographs: “Atomizm a indywidualizm. Rozważania nad myślą polityczną i prawną Wilhelma von Humboldta” (2004) (Atomism contra Individualism. Reflection on Wilhelm von Humboldt’s Political and Legal Thought) and “Max Stirner. Jednostka, społeczeństwo, państwo” (2006) (Max Stirner. The Individual, Society and State), two multimedia textbooks: “Historia myśli politycznej” (2005) (The History of Political Thought) and “Prawo gospodarcze” (2006, with Tomasz Tulejski) (Economic Law). Co-author and co-editor of the work “Umowa społeczna i jej krytycy w myśli politycznej i prawnej” (2010, with Zbigniew Rau) (Social Contract and its Critics within Political and Legal Thought).



The subject of his scientific interest is the output of Polish conservative thought, 20th-century French political doctrines, as well as theoretical aspects of executive power efficiency. He published “Dobry i sprawny rząd” (1997) (Good and Efficient Government), “Żywotność konserwatyzmu. Idee polityczne Adolfa Bocheńskiego” (2005) (Longevity of Conservatism. Adolf Bocheński’s Political Ideas). Doctor Ujazdowski also prepared an anthology of pre-war texts by Stefan Kisielewski Kisiel “Przedwojenna publicystyka” (2001) (Pre-war Opinion Journalism), and a selection of Adolf Bocheński’s articles on Ukrainian matter “Zanim powstała Kultura” (2006) (Before the Beginnings of ‘Kultura’ Magazine). He also prepared an anthology “V Republika Francuska. Idee, konstytucja, interpretacje” (2010) (The Fifth French Republic. Ideas, Constitution, Interpretations). In the 80’ he was a member of the opposition organization called Young Poland Movement (Ruch Młodej Polski). Deputy to the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Term Sejm. Doctor of Laws. He defended his doctoral dissertation devoted to Alexis de Tocqueville’s thought in the Faculty of Law and Administration at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. He lectures on political and legal doctrines at the PWSBiA. He published in Znaki Nowych Czasów, Przegląd Polityczny, Studia Iurdica Lublinensia, Journal of Markets & Morality. Marek Tracz-Tryniewski was granted a scholarship at the Acton Institute. Areas of interest: Alexis de Tocqueville’s and Frédéric Bastiat’s political and legal thought, Catholic social science, and Polish tradition of “gentry democracy”. The author of the first Polish monograph on Alexis de Tocqueville’s political and legal thought.






Law graduate, doctoral student in the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Łódź. He specializes in Anglo-Saxon conservative and liberal political and legal thought. Bocheński serves as Center’s Secretary.
